The highest award in the US is the medal of honor given to members of the United States Armed Forces who risked their lives in the course of duty to protect their country. The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), Navy Cross, and Air Force Cross are other major awards given to qualified service members for their extraordinary heroism in combat.
Members of the US Armed forces that have demonstrated exceptional service under fire receives the Silver Star medal. Next is the distinguished flying horse (DFH), presented to qualified members of the US Armed forces for acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement related to flight and non-combat actions.
While people receive the previously mentioned awards based on recommendations, the purple heart is for a service member severely injured or dead from combat. Deserving members of the Army acknowledged for their meritorious service, meritorious achievement, and heroism outside combat receive the Army commendation medal.
